Christopher Nolan Returning to Universal for Next Film, Matt Damon in Talks to Star

Christopher Nolan is sticking with Oppenheimer distributor Universal Pictures for his next film and Matt Damon is in talks to star, according to Deadline.

Deadline’s report claims Nolan’s next picture is planned to arrive in IMAX on July 17, 2026.

No other details are currently known about the project.

Nolan parted with Warner Bros. after Tenet, in the wake of Warner Bros.' decision to shift its entire 2021 film slate to HBO Max, with the director saying "some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service." He instead worked with Universal for 2023’s Oppenheimer. His first film not distributed by Warner Bros. since 2000’s Memento, Oppenheimer scored seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director) and over $975 million at the global box office to boot. It is the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

For its part, Warner Bros. has previously expressed its desire to get Nolan back on board in the future.

Pending Damon’s confirmed involvement, the film would mark the third collaboration between the actor and Nolan, after Oppenheimer and 2014’s Interstellar.
