We've just gotten the latest look at Pixar's next film, Elio, giving us our clearest glimpse yet at what this space-set original movie has in store.
The trailer (below) teases some of those classic Pixar coming-of-age themes, with the young Elio being told that he needs to "meet people, make friends" — but he's aiming higher, literally. Elio reveals that he wants to get abducted by aliens, and as we see early in the trailer, he ends up succeeding.
From there, we get various glimpses of his journey through the cosmos, complete with alien creatures and even a space toilet. Disney/Pixar also released an official synopsis, which you can read below:
What if the thing you were searching for found you first? In Pixar Animation Studios’ big-screen comedic misadventure, alien-obsessed Elio discovers the answer to that question when he is transported to the Communiverse, an interplanetary paradise that is home to intelligent life from galaxies far and wide. But when he’s mistaken as Earth’s leader, he’ll have to form unexpected bonds, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and make sure he doesn’t lose the opportunity to live out his ultimate dream.
Elio was first announced back in 2022 and is now set to hit theaters on June 13, 2025. It features the voices of Yonas Kibreab as Elio, Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO. Madeline Sharafian, Turning Red's Domee Shi, and Coco's Adrian Molina directed the film.
Elio is the first movie to come after Pixar's record-shattering return to form, Inside Out 2. The sequel to Pete Docter's 2015 Oscar-winner is the highest-grossing animated movie of all time and, at the moment, it remains the highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far with a staggering $1.6 billion. It didn't come without its struggles, however; in September, we at IGN ran an in-depth report on the tumultuous making of Inside Out 2 and how it also might've impacted Elio's development.
Still, after various delays, it looks like Elio is well-slated for that June 2025 release date. For more in the meantime, check out everything we know about every upcoming Disney and Pixar movie.
