PS5 Pro Is Out Today – and Still Available at Amazon

The big day has arrived, and the PS5 Pro is now available for purchase at all the usual retailers (see it at Amazon). And unlike the rollout for the standard PS5, you can actually get your hands on it, because it's still in stock. That's good news for anyone looking to give their PS5 games a boost to make them look fantastic and run at silky smooth frame rates.

Where to Buy a PS5 Pro

This half-step-up console is not for everyone. The price alone is a big barrier of entry for many, but the tech packed into the PlayStation 5 Pro is heavy-duty stuff (see our PS5 Pro review for details on that front). Generally, if you don't have a top-of-the-line TV or you're not sensitive to lower frame rates, you don't need a PS5 Pro. It's for people who prize graphics and performance, and have a display that can handle both without breaking a sweat. And you also have to have an extra $700 plus tax lying around.

That said, the PS5 Pro has been a huge seller among IGN readers. I've seen lots of comments suggesting no one will buy one, but our numbers tell a different story. There's plenty of interest in this powerful console, which makes it all the better that Sony has managed to keep it in stock through launch.

Should You Buy a PS5 Pro?

That's the question, isn't it? If you don't have a PS5 and you have a newish TV and you have the money (that's a lot of ifs), you should probably buy a PS5 Pro. But if you already have a standard PS5, it's a dicier question. According to our review:

"The PS5 Pro delivers on [being a faster PS5], for sure, and if you find the standard PS5 leaving more to be desired from a technical perspective, it’s an intriguing prospect: running Pro-enhanced games in the new performance modes gives you essentially the old fidelity modes now targeting 60fps, sometimes with extra improvements.

PS5 Pro Disc Drive and Stand Are Sold Separately

Unfortunately, the PS5 Pro is a digital-only system out of the box, meaning the disc drive is sold separately. In fact, the box doesn’t even include a stand, so if you want to display your PS5 Pro vertically, you’ll actually need to purchase a stand separately as well. Both are currently available, though stock has been iffy since the PS5 Pro announcement.

Where to Buy a PS5 Disc Drive ($79.99)

If you want to play discs on your PS5 Pro, you'll need a disc drive, which is sold separately.

Where to Buy PS5 Vertical Stand ($29.99)

If you want to stand your PS5 Pro up vertically, you'll probably want to secure it with a stand, also sold separately.

PS5 Pro vs. PS5

You may be wondering what’s all the fuss about with the PS5 Pro. It’s a fine question, especially considering there aren’t all that many games that are exclusive to the original PS5. Most games are also available on the PS4 (to say nothing of PC, Xbox, and Switch).

When Mark Cerny announced the PS5 Pro, the big selling point he kept mentioning is that you won’t have to choose between graphics and performance. Many AAA games these days offer you the choice between playing a 60 frames per second with downgraded graphics or at 30 fps with clear, sharp graphics.

Per the official PlayStation Blog post announcing the system, here are the three main highlights of the upcoming console:

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
