The Acolyte Won't Be Renewed for a Second Season on Disney Plus - Report
Disney has reportedly opted not to renew The Acolyte, the latest live-action Star Wars series on Disney+, for a second season.
It looks like The Acolyte, the latest live-action Star Wars series on Disney+, will not be getting a second season.
That news comes via a report today on Deadline, whose sources tell the outlet that Disney has elected to not proceed with Season 2. Disney has not yet made an official announcement on whether or not The Acolyte would continue, and IGN has reached out to Disney for comment.
According to the Deadline report, while The Acolyte's viewership started strong, garnering 11.1 million views in its first five days of streaming, its momentum waned, dropping out of Nielsen's weekly Top 10 chart in week 3. It would return to the Top 10 at #10, however, for the season finale.
The Acolyte wrapped up its eight-episode run on Disney+ in July, with a finale that clearly left the door open for another season. Showrunner Leslye Headland had commented on the possibility of future seasons in the past, telling Entertainment Weekly that she has "four or five major mysteries" that she would've liked to address in a potential Season 2.
Most recently, star Manny Jacinto was asked about it at D23, saying his he was keeping his "fingers crossed" that he'd be able to return to his character.
Still, the series, which followed a mysterious Jedi investigation at the end of the High Republic era, proved divisive among critics and fans alike. IGN gave Season 1 a 6/10 in our review, writing, "Brimming with strong ideas for new directions in the Star Wars universe, The Acolyte’s first season is hurt by clumsy storytelling."
Even though The Acolyte apparently won't be getting more episodes, Lucasfilm still has plenty of Star Wars shows left on the schedule. At D23, Disney finally premiered a trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which is premiering on December 3, and Andor Season 2 is set to debut sometime next year. Ahsoka Season 2 is also in development, as Disney confirmed early this year.
