Pixar's Pete Docter announced during D23's big Friday night presentation that Brad Bird, writer/director of the first two The Incredibles films, is currently working on the next installment following the beloved super-family. Further details, including a release date and voice cast, were not revealed.
The confirmation, while exciting, shouldn't come as a huge shock for those keeping up with Pixar's developments. After a rough few years, a recent Bloomberg report revealed that the company would double down on existing IP like The Incredibles and Finding Nemo as it attempts to rebound at the box office. Inside Out 2's massive success likely only reaffirmed that approach, with the animated sequel officially becoming one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies ever worldwide just earlier this month.
The Incredibles 2 arrived in 2018, a full 14 years after the first movie. It proved that their was plenty of appetite left to see the super-antics of the Parr family, grossing $1.2 billion at the global box office. IGN gave it a 9.2/10, writing at the time that "Brad Bird’s strong script and direction elevates Incredibles 2 to new heights."
The first Incredibles film, of course, was a hit in its own right, grossing $632 million worldwide and winning the Best Animated Film Academy Award.
Other Disney movies, including Moana 2, Frozen 3, and another Pixar film, Elio, got spotlights at D23 as well. For more out of D23 2024, check out our roundup of everything announced at Friday night's massive Disney Entertainment Showcase.
