What Should You Buy on October Prime Day This Year?

Amazon first started its Prime Big Deal Days sale in 2022 as the retailer's first attempt at a second Prime Day-level event. I have been browsing and writing about October Prime Day deals since that first year, and despite it taking place just before Black Friday deals begin, it's still a great time to save money on the things you want and need most.

That being said, October Prime Day is not as big as Black Friday and not everything is going to be discounted to the lowest-ever prices. But this yearly Amazon fall sale is known for discounts on a few different items, and if you're hoping to pick those up, this shopping event is a good time to buy. Based on previous years and trends leading up to the sale this year, here are our recommendations of what to buy during October Prime Day 2024.

1. Amazon Devices

Like every Amazon sale, October Prime Day is a great time to buy Amazon devices. A lot of these discounts have already gone live, and you can find low prices on every Fire TV stick, Echo smart speakers, Fire TVs, and Fire Tablets. If it is a device specifically owned by Amazon, it is likely going to drop to Black Friday prices during this event. The only deals we haven't seen so far are steep discounts on Kindles and Ring Video Doorbells, but those will likely drop when the actual event begins.

2. Amazon Subscriptions

Within the same realm of Amazon-owned products is subscriptions. October Prime Day is one of the overall best times of the year to find discounts on Audible, Kindle, and Amazon music subscriptions. If you aren't currently a subscriber of any of these services, you can currently get the first three months for free ahead of the deals event. I took advantage of this deal last year to start my Kindle Unlimited subscription and it's definitely worth it if you are an avid reader. We've also highlighted all of the details of the Audible deal, which is great if you enjoy listening to a good audiobook every month.

3. LEGO Sets

Amazon made it clear in its original press release that LEGO deals would be a part of Prime Big Deal Days, and we are already seeing some of the lowest ever prices ahead of the sale. October is surprisingly one of the best times to buy LEGO sets every year, and with new releases arriving every month, older sets are constantly getting discounts from major retailers. Target has also stated in its Circle Week announcement that it will be featuring up to 30% off LEGO sets during its own counter Prime Day sale. I found some of the best deals on Harry Potter LEGO sets I've ever seen and there are many more early Prime Day price cuts on LEGOs already available.

4. Gaming Accessories

Although we don't expect any major console or video game deals to drop during October Prime Day, we do expect to see some great deals on some of the best gaming accessories. This includes things like popular gaming mice and keyboards, high-end gaming headsets, and even gaming chairs. October Prime Day is also generally a great time to buy a new Xbox or PS5 controller at a discount. With PS5 Pro preorders going live the day after the Amazon shopping event, the timing of these discounts would make a lot of sense.

In addition to standard gaming accessories, you can likely expect some sort of Meta Quest 3 deal. With the announcement of the Meta Quest 3S preorder last month, the price of our favorite mixed-reality headset has already dropped.

5. Headphones and Earbuds

Amazon's October sales event has also traditionally been a great time to find deals on headphones and popular wireless earbuds. Some of these deals are already live now, like the discount on Amazon Echo Buds or the price drop on the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 2. With new AirPods and the Galaxy Buds Pro 3 both arriving this year, we expect to see some great discounts on earbuds and Apple headphones. You can also expect low prices on noise-cancelling options from Bose and Sony, which seem to happen for every major sales event.

6. TVs

TVs are more affordable than ever right now. Sales events like Prime Day 2 are always a good time to buy a TV. That said, you need to be careful to check prices before you buy. Black Friday is still generally the better time to buy a high-end gaming TV, so many of the best discounts will be on the TV brands Amazon owns. This is also true for the Walmart counter sale and Walmart-owned brands. Amazon is already offering discounts on Fire TVs ahead of the event, and the other major brands like Samsung and LG will likely offer sales of their own to compete as the event kicks off.

7. Home Appliances and Electronics

Some of the best deals on electronics from the fall sale will likely be on home appliances. These are things like coffee makers, smart vacuums, electric toothbrushes, toasters, etc. These items will also be discounted during Black Friday, but since they are items that people are more likely to buy for themselves, retailers tend to drop some big price cuts during this time of year. Amazon in particular already has discounts on popular espresso machines and vacuums ahead of the event.

8. Books and Graphic Novels

Although book sales don't tend to get as much coverage as the more expensive tech items on this list, they are still some of the most sought-after discounts within each event. During Prime Day in July, we saw some of the best discounts of the year on popular illustrated editions and Batman comics. We are already seeing some of these discounts arise on Amazon as sales heat up, and considering it's one of the best places to buy books online, you can expect more soon.

Should You Wait for Black Friday to Buy Anything?

As I mentioned earlier, October Prime Day is not as good as Black Friday in terms of overall discounts across every category. Still, it's generally a good time to find discounts on things you need sooner than later. Within all of the categories I've listed here, many products might not decrease further in price until or even on actual Black Friday 2024. The exception to this is some of the bigger budget items, like gaming PCs and video game consoles, which tend to have better promotions as the holidays draw near. Of course, Nintendo is already offering Black Friday Switch bundles well ahead of the upcoming sales events, so there are exceptions to that rule.

In general, the traditional method of deals shopping has been changing over the years and the best time to buy anything is basically whenever it has dropped to its lowest price to-date. For Amazon specifically, you can take advantage of historical price tracking via the CamelCamelCamel website to see if the deal you're getting is actually a good one. All in all, just do your research before you buy and you'll most likely get a good price on anything you purchase during these sales events.
