Twilight Animated Series Moving Forward at Netflix as Midnight Sun Adaptation

Netflix has greenlit a Twilight animated series that will cover the events of author Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 retelling, Midnight Sun.

The streaming platform confirmed that work on an adaptation carrying the book's name had begun in a post on X/Twitter. Details on how the show will bring the events to Netflix subscribers have yet to be revealed, but we do at least know that the original novel it’s based on follows the story of Twilight through the eyes of its sparkly vampire heartthrob, Edward Cullen. A release date for the animated Midnight Sun series has also not been announced yet.

Netflix shared more information about its Midnight Sun show in a post on its website. Meyer is attached to the project as executive producer. Joining her through her Fickle Fish Films umbrella is her partner, Meghan Hibbett. Temple Hill Entertainment’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen as well as Picturestart’s Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey have also boarded the Twilight series along with Tell Me Lies and The Walking Dead: World Beyond veteran Sinead Daly, who will serve as an executive producer and writer.

We first learned about a potential Twilight show back in April 2023, when The Hollywood Reporter shared that Lionsgate was interested in pursuing a series take on the divisive fantasy romance franchise. Details were light at the time, and it wasn’t until March of this year that a Variety report clarified that Lionsgate was moving forward with the series as an animated show. Although we now know that the animated Midnight Sun show is coming to Netflix, no cast has been confirmed yet.

Meyer published the series in novel form in the mid-2000s. It quickly become one of the more popular series of the time and, of course, eventually spawned four movie adaptations, including its two-part Breaking Dawn finale. The films – which star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner – wrapped up in 2012, leaving fans without much content to sink their teeth into until now.
